Jackson: Art Institute of Chicago Lion Statues Get Blackhawk Hockey Helmets

Posted: Wednesday, June 12, 2013

The iconic lion statues in front of the Art Institute of Chicago got a new look Wednesday morning -- Blackhawk hockey helmets.

The Art Institute has a tradition of dressing up the lions in local sports team gear during big games and playoffs. The lions have worn Bulls and Blackhawks jerseys, a Bears helmet and gear from both baseball teams over the years.

Three workers secured the helmets on the lions during Wednesday's morning rush, attracting tourists, locals and Chicago's media. The helmets are tethered by ropes that loop around the neck and underbelly of the statue. They had best be secure as a strong storm with damaging winds is expected to hit Chicago late Wednesday afternoon. (Photos/Mike Reilley)
